My Husband, the Hoarder

I’m just starting to shake off the trauma that was our move so I now feel ready to face the world again.  You might think that using the word “trauma” may be a bit overdramatic when describing a move and normally, I’d agree with you but tell me how you would feel after a 15 hour move* at $140/hour…

Anyway.  As I was unpacking our bathroom stuff, I came upon a box that had an unusual amount of hair gel bottles.  (I may have mentioned this before but I don’t use hair gel, though I probably should; I’m far too lazy.  My husband, however, cannot live without hair gel.  That’s fine, I’m totally cool with that.)  I thought it was odd that he would have so may bottles of hair gel and I wondered if he just bought it in bulk or something.  But when I opened the first one, I found it empty.  And then the second.  And the third.  And it kept going…six bottles of empty hair gel.  I’ve talked before about how my husband has a very annoying habit of opening new things before he’s finished with the old but this is the first time I’ve stumbled upon this particularly irritating habit of holding onto empty containers for no reason.

I have yet to finish all the unpacking and really, I’m afraid of what I might find.  Empty shoe boxes?  Cases of pens with no ink left in them?  A stash of used up toothpaste tubes?  Actually, I think I just figured out why it took the the movers 15 hours.

*For those wondering, this wasn’t a cross-country move.  We moved from Connecticut to NYC, which is only an hour away.

  1. sounds like the move from hell. so glad to hear you are done and able to start settling into your new home.

  2. I used to date a guy who did this exact thing. 12 empty deoderant containers? Why? Mind boggling.

  3. If I’d asked you how much the move cost, you would’ve told me $25.

Oops, I forgot you may read this blog. Um…yeah…that’s what I meant to say: the move cost $25 total.

  4. Wife,

I must correct the record here. I don’t use gel. I use paste. Just like in the photo above–clearly states “styling paste.”

Also, they’re not empty. They have a little bit left in them.

    Signed,

    Husband (Annoying)

  5. Didn’t you guys just move FROM the city?

    • myhusbandisannoying

Um…well…yeah, ok. You got us. We moved out to the suburbs right before we had the baby and then, 11 months later, decided we weren’t too keen on the suburbs and moved back. We may be the only people in the history of parenthood to have a kid and then move into an even smaller place voluntarily. And as much as I love the city and am glad to be back, it sure is hard going from a whole house to a one bedroom apartment. Ugh.

  6. Uh on, hope I don’t see him on the next episode of “Hoarders, Buried Alive”. LOL- Good Luck!!

  7. My husband does the same thing..he is too lazy to bring it to the kitchen to throw them out..

  8. I would love to move so we could get rid of the junk my husband has accumulated after 26 yrs living in our home. He has never sold one thing or gotten rid of anything. He just hides it in the attic, garage, one of his 2 sheds he has built for his stuff. Now bear in mind nothing is organized and just stuffed in boxes and strewn about….He has 2 vehicles in our back yard he doesn’t use and a boat, and a trailer. All of our four kids junk that they have left here after they moved out still in stuffed in closets, the garage and my husband’s storage areas. It is really driving me crazy and I have offered to double the sale price of those vehicles and give the cash to him if he would just sell them… What can I do? I don’t know if he is emotionally attached to this stuff or thinks that some of it is of value- it would have been if he sold it 10 yrs ago like the car and truck instead of letting it lie around getting rusty in the yard.

  9. My husband is just as guilty! He puts empty containers back in the refrigerator, pantry and cabinets all the time. He has something against throwing away junk mail and would rather let it pile up in various piles around the house. I feel like a trash collector going around the house throwing away all of his trash! And I have to ask him several times to take out the trash even though he just threw something away and had to cram it in there because the can is so full. It is especially gross when some food product ends up on the underside of the lid because the can is so full and he is still cramming stuff in there, icky and all.
