For some reason, my husband never carries any cash with him. If we’re out together and he wants to pick up a newspaper or a cup of coffee, he’ll ask me for cash. If we’re not together, we end up with a multitude of debit card receipts for $2 or less. When I do our banking or balance our checkbook, I’m constantly amazed at the number of times he’ll use plastic to pay for his tiny purchases. Call me old fashioned, but I don’t think anybody should pay for a stamp with a credit card.
A while ago, we were at Starbucks where my husband wanted to get a coffee. Now, he doesn’t drink any of those fancy latte or frappuccino thingies; he is a straight up coffee guy. So when he buys coffee at Starbucks, it generally costs around $1.75. We could probably find $1.75 just looking under the cushions of our couch. And yet, he never has cash. So he whipped out the credit card and I cringed in embarrassment. And when I tried to hand him two singles, he insisted that he didn’t need it. ”It’s faster just to swipe my card!”
Why do men always think faster is better? (Just once I’d like a backrub that lasts longer than 30 seconds….)

haha I am a culprit of this…I NEVER have cash on me…lol I hate going to the ATM!
My husband never has cash either. It’s a real pain because we both have our own spending money, and he’s constantly asking to “borrow” my cash spending money for those small amount purchases. The problem is, he never pays it back, and when I ask to borrow his spending money he always says, “I don’t have any cash on me”. Annoying!
Hahaha, I wonder how many other things are better if they are “faster”!!!
Despite this post being about credit cards & cash, my favorite part is the end, where you say “Why do men always think faster is better? (Just once I’d like a backrub that lasts longer than 30 seconds….)”. This is so true!!! My husband loves having his hand tickled while we’re watching TV or a movie and I do it at least every other day if not every day for the whole time we’re in front of the TV but yet when I ask for my hand to be tickled, he has an attention span of a kindergartner and can only tickle it for 30 secs before I hear “my hand is tired”. AH!
I’m guilty of this too. I never carry cash. I’m thinking I need to start a tip jar at home, just so I have petty cash for my Starbucks….it is embarrassing to use a debit card for anything under two bucks.
I never carry cash. It’s more of a hassle to find an ATM that doesn’t charge me $2.50 for my money than it it to whip out the Visa for a Snickers.
Faster isn’t necessarily better, but convenient sure is.
My gf never has any cash on her either. When she does, she’ll say “oh I don’t want to break this 20 dollar bill can you get this for me sweetie?” (bats her eyelashes)
Hi, welcome to 2009, please take a seat. Why carry a wallet full of cash when you can slide a debit card to the same effect? Why carry pocket change – which, in your case, seems to inevitably wind up under your cushions – when you can slide a card and not lose a penny? Use a debit card enough times and those small purchases could mean card points as well. Buy two or three cups of coffee a day each day of the year and you quickly realize that using plastic is not only “faster” (and yes, faster is better) but also more “economically” viable (a concept many women don’t understand).
To yk: Don’t be so rude.

I routinely use my debit card to make purchases of $2 or less. I do the majority of my banking online and refuse to use an ATM if it’s not affiliated with my bank (fees), so I rarely have cash. When I do have cash, it’s because I used my debit card to buy groceries and asked for cash back in the supermarket. My point is that…preferring plastic to cash is not a man thing.

Dear God, I hear you on that!
My wife has lived many years in US and she too shared your view about using credit card for small payments. But that changed shortly after we married and she moved to Denmark (yes, I am a Dane). In Denmark almost everything is payed with a credit card – even a single stamp which cost around 0.7 USD! Nobody consider it strange to be without cash. We even buy tickets for the metro with our cell phones by just sending an SMS!
My bf is the opposite. He hates using his debit card for some reason! If he doesn’t have enough cash, he doesn’t want to pay. I think he will literally pay for a house in cash when he has enough saved. I use cash when I have it, but have no problem putting stamps and Starbucks on my card.
As long as you are careful wih those cards! My husband would use his for eveything, then neglect to write it down or tell me about it. One month we had out 8 OD charges and I had to take the card away from him! I’ve given it back, but I’m keeping my eye on him.
