The Never Ending To-Do List

Each night before we go to sleep, my husband makes a to-do list for the next day.  Since he’s often juggling multiple projects at once, I always thought this was a good idea.  That is, until I actually looked at one of these lists.

(Not his actual to do list)

(Not his actual to do list)

Turns out, he puts about 20 or 30 items on his list every single day.  Now, I don’t know about your day, but ours seems to only have 24 hours in it.  And generally, 8 of those are spent sleeping.  (Well, truthfully, it’s more than that.  But saying that 10 of those hours are spent sleeping makes us sound pretty damn lazy so I’m gonna go with 8.)  And for some reason, my husband is surprised and discouraged when he only seems to get a few of the items on his list done; he can’t understand why it seems impossible to actually have all of his to-do list done at the end of the day.  So what ends up happening is that he’ll transfer all of the things he didn’t get done that day to the next day’s to-do list which, of course, only makes it even more impossible to get that one completed.  It’s a vicious circle that seems to confound him.

My solution?  Make a to-do list that looks like this:

1. Wake up

2. Do stuff

3. Go to bed

See?  It’s a guaranteed completed to-do list!

  1. You are VERY lucky that he not only puts a list together but that it’s filled with “real” stuff.

A to-do list from my hubby might look something like this.

    1) get beer
    2) drink beer
    3) play video games
    4) ignore wife’s nagging
    5) eat dinner
    6) ignore wife’s nagging again
    7) drink more beer

If only he’d put actual chores on a list.. I might actually bring him a beer!!

  2. I want to see his actual to-do list.

  3. I LOVE your to-do list! Now if my husband would only attempt #2 on your list I’d be happy!

  4. I had a to-do list the other day…. it had 6 things on it.. and it took me one whole work week to get it all done. And I was glad to get it all done by Friday! Can’t imagine a list with 20-30 things to do!

  5. I make my husbands to-do list. It usually starts out as a honey do list and ends up, DO OR I’M GOING TO GET PISSED LIST!

  6. For once, i completely agree with you. My wife does the same exact thing with her lists: makes them too dang long for any human to finish. And then she’s annoyed that she only got half of her stuff done.

here’s a list for all list makers:
    1. rip up list.
    2. quit making them

    There, my job is done.

  7. Um… You sleep 10 hours each night of the week? LUCKY

  8. No wonder he never gets it done…can’t figure out what it says.

  9. …..does he REALLY put “shower and shave” on his to do list????……..
